Ayurvedic Massage

ayurvedic massageAyurveda is India’s traditional healing system, it is a profound system of mind –body therapy, natural living and yogic health. Ayurveda means the science of life and longevity. It is recognized today in the West for its wonderful dietary, herbal, lifestyle and yogic therapies that help us to live happier and more in harmony with the world

Ayurveda is not just for Indians, it is an open resource, a living universal tradition that can be adapted to time, place and person. Like Chinese medicine, Ayurveda treats mind, body and emotions with equal care and aims to optimize the relationship between internal forces in the body and external forces found throughout nature.

What is an Ayurvedic massage

There are different types of massage. The three types are Abhyanga, which uses oil, Udvartana, which uses herbal powders, and Snehana/ Svedhana, which uses warm clay packs and oil. These types of massage can be combined in any one session. For example one person might benefit greatly from a warm compress placed on their back. Another person might benefit from having herbal powder dusted over their body at the end of the session.

Depending on your needs, the Ayurvedic massage you will receive can be harmonising, stimulating, liberating or a combination of the three. The harmonising aspect of the massage feels like fluid ripples or undulating rhythms moving through the body, the stimulating aspect of the massage feels warming and tonifying . The liberating aspect of the massage helps to release deeply held tensions in the body and clear out stagnant areas and deep muscle knots. The masseuse uses her breath, focus and touch to move these knots through channels to exit the body.

Ayurvedic massage also concerns itself with the treatment and massage of marmas (reflex points) and energy meridians (nadis). Marma points are the ancient acupuncture points and many of them resemble the points used in Traditional Chinese medicine. Through the massage of the meridians and marmas, imbalances of the doshas can be restored.

What to expect

An Ayurvedic massage covers the whole body from the front to the back, feet, hands, neck, head and face. All body parts are given equal care and attention. In addition, Ayurvedic head massage and Ayurvedic reflexology massage which are often given alone, are fully incorporated into this treatment. The client is unclothed and is kept comfortable and warm by towels and blankets. The oil is applied warm to the skin.

An Ayurvedic massage is one of the deepest therapeutic massages you will experience. By the end of the session you will be feeling light, relaxed, and deeply satisfied.
