Massage in labour

Massage is an effective method of managing pain in labour. Touch impulses reach the brain faster than pain impulses so touch can alleviate the experience of pain as well as the build of stress and tension that occurs simultaneously during contractions. Reflex points can be stimulated to release endorphins, the body’s natural pain relief.

Massage of the back during contractions can help reduce the pain that is experienced in this region. Massage of the face, jaw, hands, legs and feet between contractions is extremely beneficial in easing held tensions and relaxing the mother so that she can rest and conserve her energy for her labour.

Receiving massage at the beginning of labour has been shown to help establish and promote labour by essentially relaxing the mother and supporting the flow of birth hormones.

The massage of reflex points on the body assist the body’s intelligence in its workings and therefore support a lady in labour.

Massage in labour also gives mothers an emotional support. Touch as a positive form of non-verbal communication helps convey to the mother that she is being looked after. This reassurance in turn, keeps mums focused on their body, labour and baby.
