Antenatal Yoga

Widely recommended by midwives and doctors, yoga is the ideal exercise to keep pregnant women healthy and mobile.

Pregnant woman doing yogaDuring the nine months of pregnancy many physiological changes occur which profoundly affect a woman’s body, emotions and mind.

Yoga helps to maintain physical health and inner harmony through this time of intense change and on in to the future.

Exercise in pregnancy needs to be non-strenuous and safe. Pregnancy yoga avoids imposing any kind of strain on the body or pushing your body beyond its comfortable limits.

The weekly classes offer a holistic programme of breathwork, postures, movement, relaxation and meditations. We concentrate on fluidity of movement and breath and moving in cycles and  harmonising rhythms. A lot of the yoga is taught on special exercise balls.

It is recommended to begin classes in the third month of pregnancy (after 14 weeks) and continue throughout in order to gain maximum benefits.

Regular practice of yoga enchances your experience of pregnancy, it will help you to cope with any symptoms such as backache, tiredness, moodswings, heartburn e.t.c . In addition, yoga can help prepare you for birth. By attending a minimum of 6- 8 classes you will become familiar with the sequences and acquire an ‘embodied’ memory of the yogic techniques.

With such familiarity and experience, you will automatically find yourself using what is most comfortable and appropriate during your labour. Much of the yoga taught in class, is designed to prepare you for managing your pain naturally as well as overcoming strain, resistance or fear.
